Dame Margaret Anstee DCMG
Dame Margaret Anstee, DCMG served at the United Nations for over four decades, rising to the rank of Under-Secretary General in 1987.
During her UN career (1952-93), she handled disaster relief operations in Bangladesh, Mexico, Chernobyl and Kuwait. She served as Director General of the UN in Vienna and Coordinator of all UN narcotic drug control programmes, was Head of the Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs, and in 1992-93, she was the Secretary General’s Special Representative to Angola and Head of the UN peacekeeping mission there (UNAVEM II).
Since leaving the UN, she has served as an independent Consultant, advising Bolivia on development and international finance issues and also the UN on operational aspects of post-conflict peace-building. She chairs its Peacekeeping Operations Advisory Board and takes part in practical training in peacekeeping techniques for military and civilian personnel in many countries.
