Festival History
The We The Peoples Film Festival first took place in 2006. It was inspired by the Stories from the Field United Nations Documentary Film Festival based in New York.
In 2007 the festival was themed around the UN Millennium Development Goals; the main festival sessions showcased films looking at how communities across the world confront challenges relating to their health, education, gender and the environment.
In addition to this there was a dedicated session on Reporting the UN in crisis, as well as the United Kingdom’s first peace films compilation, entitled Towards a Culture of Peace.
The 2008 festival took as its theme the Three Pillars of Freedom. The opening Gala event was hosted by Clifford Chance LLP and featured a series of short films by leading international directors, each identifying outstanding challenges in the struggle to achieve fair human rights for all. Screenings were held at the Riverside Studios, the Frontline Club, St. Ethelburga’s Church and several university campuses throughout London. The Young Film Makers for Development session was hosted by the National Film Theatre in its South Bank flagship location.
